Child Safety and Care

Sadly, more than one billion children experience violence every year, and girls and boys experience violence differently, as well as face different risks across various forms of violence.

Evidence shows that violence, abuse, neglect and or exploitation can cause irreversible damage to a child’s health and development – both in the short and longer term. This can impair their ability to develop, learn, socialise and thrive into adulthood.

A Charter of Commitment to Children and Young People is a set of commitments or promises that an organisation makes to create a safer environment for its children and young people.
These commitments are based on what children and young people have told the National Children’s Commissioner during consultations on the National Principles about what they consider are the important characteristics of safety in an organisation.

The National Children’s Commissioner consulted with the children and young people in a range of organisations using a child-friendly version of the National Principles to establish which principles were the most important to them, what the concept of safety meant to them and how their rights could be upheld in a child safe organisation.

The National Principles for Child Safe Organisations emphasise the importance of each organisation having policies and procedures that document how the organisation is safe for children and young people. The National Principles also indicate the need for organisations to regularly review and improve their child safe policies and practices.
